first impressions of high wycombe: matt & george's garbled but enthusiastic description of the strip show that preceeded our soundchecks (12:30-5:30? EXOTIC DANCING? is no-one working here?). a rosy-faced gentleman parking beside us as we stole refreshment outside, ditching his white lightning in the river and regaling us with a tale of drinking since that morning, followed by a brief rundown on who - in his estimation - would have most success with girls. parked his car with some success.
excellent beginnings then, and in general the night followed this theme - bands dropping from the bill and others being added juggling us into middle position. our soundcheck confirmed that we were in need of some practice but would get away with it once again. huzzah.
caught the strains of the first band wafting down towards the pool table, nice quiet mixture of guitars, violins and whatnot. bit confused about the running order, so don't know which was the first band on, the second sounding (according to a kind soul over at denial) like "2 banshees and a chorus pedal". not my cup of tea this rock and roll music the kids go for these days.
we were on next, much to my relief, and squeezed out a well-rounded nonstop rock set, hampered only by minor equipment bothering. i remember being more concerned by things breaking around us when we started this old rock game. i dunno if this is the best order for our tunes, but all onstage and some off had a little angular dance together.
lost alone used their own very clean equipment and played until the crowd was subdued. then they slowly vacated the stage, leaving 10 minutes or so to nottingham car-crash escapees love ends disaster!. they played unhampered by our lost/found/stolen/broken gear, and despite the odds being stacked against them, pulled out a quick and lovely spasmoid burst of rock for everyone. real shame we didn't get to see any more, but the brief show gets them the official CRS* thumbs up.
back at the party with many many other people. props to hella-a-likes i.r.tiger, who rocked the house, leaving a laptop to do what grown men cannot. oh, and we left before an acoustic set from lost alone. but then we had to get to bed.
